1. Overview
Momentum ("we," "our," or "the app") is a sobriety and recovery tracker for Android designed to support your journey toward a healthier life. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how your data is handled.
Momentum is a local-first app. Your personal recovery data — journal entries, check-ins, mood tracking, and sobriety progress — is stored exclusively on your device. We do not operate servers that collect, store, or process your personal information.
2. Data We Collect
Data you provide
When you use Momentum, you may choose to enter the following information. All of it remains stored locally on your device:
- Display name — an optional name or alias for personalization
- Motivation statement — your personal reason for recovery
- Recovery categories — substances you are recovering from (e.g., Alcohol, Tobacco, Cannabis, Pills, Other)
- Sobriety start date — when your current recovery journey began
- Spending & time baselines — estimated daily cost and time spent on substances, used to calculate your savings
- Journal entries — titles, text content, and photo attachments documenting your journey
- Daily check-ins — mood selections, craving intensity, sleep quality, slip tracking, and personal notes
- Notification preferences — custom reminder messages and schedules
- App preferences — theme, color, and language settings
Data collected automatically
Momentum uses Google Firebase Analytics to collect anonymous usage data that helps us improve the app. This includes:
- Usage events — such as completing onboarding, submitting a check-in, starting a breathing exercise, or changing a setting. These events do not contain the content of your entries.
- User properties — non-identifying flags such as whether onboarding is complete, your theme preference, and whether you have a Momentum Plus subscription.
- Standard device data — device model, OS version, app version, language, and general location (country-level) as collected by Firebase by default.
We never collect or transmit the content of your journal entries, your check-in notes, your display name, your motivation statement, or any other personal text you enter into the app. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly share or export it.
3. Local Storage
Momentum stores your data in two local storage systems on your device:
| Data | Storage | Shared With |
|---|---|---|
| Journal entries & attachments | Device Only | No one |

4. Third-Party Services
Momentum integrates with the following Google services. Each service operates under its own privacy policy:
Google Firebase Analytics
We use Firebase Analytics to understand how features are used so we can improve the app experience. Analytics data is aggregated and anonymized. We track events like "onboarding completed" or "check-in submitted" but never transmit the content of your personal entries. You can limit analytics data collection through your device's privacy settings.
Google AdMob
Free users may see banner advertisements served by Google AdMob. AdMob may use device identifiers and usage data to serve ads, including personalized ads based on your Google ad preferences. You can opt out of personalized ads in your device's Google settings. Momentum Plus subscribers do not see advertisements.
Google Play Billing
Subscription purchases for Momentum Plus are processed entirely through Google Play. We do not collect or store your payment information (credit card numbers, billing address, etc.). We only receive a purchase token from Google to verify your subscription status.
For more details on how Google handles your data, please refer to Google's Privacy Policy.
5. Advertising
Momentum displays banner ads to free users through Google AdMob. These ads help support the development of the app.
- Ads may be personalized based on your Google ad settings and device information
- You can opt out of ad personalization in your device settings under Google > Ads
- Momentum Plus subscribers enjoy a completely ad-free experience
- No personal recovery data (journal entries, check-ins, mood, etc.) is ever shared with advertisers
6. Subscriptions
Momentum Plus is an optional subscription that removes ads and unlocks premium features. Subscriptions are managed entirely through Google Play:
- All payment processing is handled by Google Play — we never see your payment details
- We store a purchase token locally on your device to verify your subscription status
- You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time through the Google Play Store
- Subscription status (active, expired, grace period) is stored locally and checked against Google Play
7. Permissions
Momentum requests only the permissions it needs to function. Each permission is explained below:
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Internet | Required for analytics, ads, and subscription verification through Google services |
| Network State | Check whether an internet connection is available before making requests |
| Notifications | Send your customized daily recovery reminders (Android 13+, you can deny or revoke at any time) |
| Read Media Images | Allow you to attach photos from your gallery to journal entries (Android 13+, requested only when needed) |
| Billing | Process Momentum Plus subscriptions through Google Play |
Momentum does not request access to your camera, microphone, contacts, location, call logs, or any other sensitive device features.
8. Data Sharing & Export
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties. Your recovery data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to share it.
User-initiated sharing
Momentum provides features that allow you to share your progress on your own terms:
- Progress share cards — generate a visual milestone card that you can save to your gallery or share via any app on your device
- Data export — export your recovery data (dashboard stats, journal entries, notification settings) as a JSON file that you control
These features are entirely voluntary. You decide what to share and with whom. We have no visibility into data you export or share.
No external servers
Momentum does not operate its own backend servers. We do not have an account system, cloud sync, or remote database. The only network communication is with Google services (Firebase Analytics, AdMob, and Google Play Billing) as described in this policy.
9. Data Retention
Because your data is stored locally on your device, you have full control over its retention:
- Journal entries — remain on your device until you delete them individually through the app
- Check-ins — remain on your device until you delete them through the app
- Profile & preferences — persist until you reset the app through onboarding or uninstall it
- All local data — is permanently removed when you uninstall Momentum from your device
Analytics data collected by Firebase is retained according to Google's Firebase data retention policies.
10. Security
We take the security of your data seriously:
- All data is stored in your device's private app storage, inaccessible to other apps
- Network communication with Google services uses encrypted HTTPS connections
- The app uses Android's sandboxed storage model to protect your journal entries and personal data
- Release builds use code obfuscation (R8/ProGuard) to protect the app against reverse engineering
While we implement reasonable security measures, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure. We encourage you to keep your device protected with a screen lock and up-to-date software.
11. Children's Privacy
Momentum is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, please contact us and we will provide guidance on removing any locally stored data.
12. Your Rights
Because Momentum is a local-first app, you inherently have full control over your data:
- Access — all your data is visible directly in the app at any time
- Export — use the built-in export feature to download a copy of your data
- Delete — remove individual journal entries and check-ins, or uninstall the app to delete everything
- Rectify — edit your profile, baselines, and preferences at any time through the app
- Ad personalization — opt out of personalized ads through your device's Google ad settings
- Analytics — limit ad tracking and analytics through your device privacy settings
If you have questions about your data or need assistance exercising your rights with respect to data held by Google services, please contact us.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in the app or applicable regulations. When we make changes:
- The "Effective Date" at the top of this page will be updated
- Material changes will be communicated through an in-app notice
- Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy
We encourage you to review this page periodically.
